Our
Ministries : Community
Ministry/Mission
"Lord,
when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or
without clothes, or sick, or in prison...?" Matthew 25...
The
Community Ministry/Mission Committee is responsible for local
and world-wide mission.
Community Ministry
The twice-weekly food pantry and
twice-monthly walk-in
meals provide much needed food assistance to individuals
and families in our area.

Summer’s Best Two Weeks is a summer day
camp provided for Grades 1 through 7 and focusing on putting God
first, others second, and “myself third” through sports,
Bible lessons, and fun.
The Concert in the Lot is another summer program
where our members and neighbors come to enjoy a free picnic while
listening to jazz, sacred music, and Christian rap. Free health
screening was provided by the mobile health unit from the Synod
of the Covenant. FPC also provides emergency assistance with utility
bills.
A sewing group provides beautiful tied quilts and knitting for
those in need.
The after school tutoring program provides a place where elementary
and middle school youth can come and receive help with homework
and to practice reading and math skills.
Most recently, First Presbyterian Church has begun creating relationships
in the community to work toward housing rehabilitation and increased
home ownership in our area.
Campus ministry at the University of Akron also falls
under this committee.
World Mission
Each year the Session approves funds for General Mission causes.
A large share of these funds are sent to Louisville, KY (PCUSA)
to support mission through the General Assembly, Synod, and Presbytery.
Of these funds, we designate a portion for specific mission causes,
all approved by the General Assembly Mission Committee. They are:
- A medical missionary in Turkey.
- A missionary working with at-risk children in Croatia.
- Medical missionaries in the Congo.
- Agricultural missionaries in Haiti.

The remaining funds approved by session for General Mission were
sent directly to support the AMEN project
(All Mothers Educated Now), a women's literacy mission in Pakistan.
Periodically we have been blessed by by a visit to Akron and
our worship service by Josna Azim, the director of AMEN.
Finally, the Alternative Gift Market, in partnership
with Alternative
Gifts International, provides an annual opportunity
for individuals to participate in world mission. This market, held
at FPC, allows members and friends to buy a gifts in the name of
loved ones for overseas projects like schoolbooks for children
in Iraq, aid to free indentured families in India, Gardens for
a Health Planet, and blankets for Recovery in North Korea.
